Amritsar International Airport (ATQ)

Amritsar Raja Sansi International Airport (IATA: ATQ, ICAO: VIAR) serves the Indian city of Amritsar. It is located 11 kilometers northwest of the city center, nearby the village of Raja Sansi. The airport not only serves Amritsar district, it also serves Punjab areas, the western districts of Himachal Pradesh and the southern districts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Amritsar, traditionally known as Ramdaspur and colloquially known as Ambarsar, is a 1,132,761 inhabitant city located in the Indian state of Punjab and its largest city.

It is nearby Pakistan, since the Wagah Border is just at 28 kilometer distance. From there you can easily get to Lahore, the second city of Pakistan.

Amritsar features for being the home city of Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple), which is the spiritual and cultural center for the Sikh religion. It attracts more visitors than the Taj Mahal, being the most popular destination for non-residents Indians.

Regarding economy, the commercial activities performed in Amritsar comprises farm produce, carpets and fabrics, tourism, service trades and light engineering.

The city is also known for being rich for its cuisine and culture.

Other major attractions of Amritsar are the Jallianwala Bagh, Akal Takht and Tarn Taran Sahib temple.

According to its climate, the best time to visit Amritsar is in the winter, between October and March.


Amritsar International Airport in the past was named Guru Ram Das in honor to the fourth Sikh Guru and founder of Amritsar city. Later on, was renamed as Raja Sansi, which is the name that held nowadays.

Regarding transport, there are plans to launch regular bus services from the airport to several cities of Punjab state, as well as the intention to build a monorail line to connect with Amritsar’s major attraction, the Golden Temple, and with the central railway station.
